April 7, 2013 (Rockland, ON, Courtesy pedalmag.com) – The Clarence-Rockland Classic kicked off early Sunday morning under dark skies and threats of rain. For those who do not know, the race is an 81km cyclosportive “race” held over a mix of dirt/gravel (30km) and paved roads (50km). Despite the cool temperatures, 138 riders came to the start line, motivated by the fact that they would be racing their own small version of the “big boy” race happening at the same time off in France. Local golf courses need volunteers for upcoming tournaments

Now that her two-year term as Ottawa Valley Golf Association (OVGA) president has ended, Jean Stone-Seguin can devote even more time to her duties as head of the host committee for the 2012 Canadian Men's Amateur Golf Championship.

Rockland Cobras:
The Peewee Minor AA brings home the Gold from Toronto tournament

The Eastern Ontario Cobra’s Peewee Minor AA team from Rockland were recently crowned champions at the Toronto Royals 2010 Peewee ‘AA’ Tournament in Toronto last December.

An impressive effort of teamwork and determination placed the team first overall with a 3-0 record through the round robin play. Game one entailed a hard fought physical battle versus the home team Toronto Royals with the Cobras earning an opening tournament 6-3 victory.

Game two allowed the Cobras to hit their stride in a close battle with a determined Goulding Park Rangers in a heated affair that resulted in a 4-2 victory.

With confidence on the Cobras side, the boys finished out the round robin play with a dominant 5-0 victory over the Toronto Penguins.

The Semi-final versus the undefeated second place team from group B paired Vaughn Rangers versus Cobras which finished with a confident 3-0 Cobra victory.

The Cobra parents were fired up and were certainly the teams extra man on the ice during the tournament. The loud cheering and the “cow bell” kept the teams’ heart beat racing, as well as the parents on the opposing team! The enthusiastic support from the families was important as the players were feeding off the energy.

The Championship game placed the two undefeated teams to play for the bragging rights. The Willowdale Blackhawks came out strong and proved to be a determined opponent that wanted to keep the title in Southern Ontario. A close fought game and increasing pressure from the Blackhawks pulled the boys together and took a 2-0 lead that the Cobras would hold to the final buzzer to take the Championship.

Head coach Brian Melee says local Rockland area players Nathan Melee, Maxime Habel and Samuel Labre were key in the path to victory.

Great job team! The players would like to pass on their appreciation to the families and fans as at moments, sounded as if we they had 1000 people cheering them on.

Feature: Alfred's Benoit Pouliot (also played for Clarence Creek)
(Courtesy the Orleans Star) Growing up in Alfred, half way between Montreal and Ottawa, Benoit Pouliot had to choose his National Hockey League allegiance.

Would he be a Montreal Canadiens supporter or cheer for his home-province Ottawa Senators? He chose the…Pittsburgh Penguins?

Nowadays Pouliot doesn't go to see either the Sens or the Pens play. Recently, he was in town to play with the Canadiens against the Senators at Scotiabank Place. Playing in the NHL is a long way from the time he spent with the junior B

Katie Weatherston's Hockey Camp coming up March 14
Since we posted this information on our web site we learned from Doug Janney, president of the Clarence-Rockland Girls Hockey Association that the December workshop was a big success with approximately 65 young women attending the school.

The second of two all-girls hockey camps being put on by
Katie Weatherston, Olympic Gold Medalist, 2006 Olympics, will be held from March 14 to March 16 at the Jean-Marc Lalonde Arena, 1450 Avenue du Parc, between 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. The camps include three hours of on-ice time and three hours of off-ice time per day. They are for young women born from 1996 to 2004 (ages 8-16) and the cost to participants is $225.

Weatherston started the camps in 2005 in her home town of Thunder Bay. She offers annual week long summer camps in Ottawa, Thunder Bay, and Kenora.

"My camp provides female hockey players with the tools they need to improve their skills and raise awareness of the opportunities that are available to women through sport," says Weatherston. "Our goal is to offer the players a well organized, fun, and educational camp at a low cost."

This is the first year that she offered two Christmas Break Hockey Camps and two March Break camps in the Ottawa region.

March Camp
The second Rockland camp will take place in
March from Monday the 14th to Wednesday the 16th, Jean-Marc Lalonde Arena, 450 avenue du Park Avenue, 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

This camp will include two hours and 20 minutes of on-ice time and four hours of off-ice time per day. Again they are for young women born from 1996 to 2004 (ages 8-16)
at a cost of $225.

You can learn more about these camps at the
Katie Weatherston Hockey Camp web site.

Navan Arena fire forces game delay

Players in a men’s hockey league were forced from the Navan Arena after a fire started in the canteen Tuesday evening. Ottawa firefighters and paramedics responded to a call after the fire filled the arena lobby on Colonial Road with smoke.

Paramedics checked one person for possible inhalation of toxic fumes at the scene.

Crews responded within seconds

Ottawa paramedics’ spokesman Steven Leu said crews were able to respond within seconds after receiving the call just after 10:30 p.m. because the paramedics station is right across the street from the arena on Colonial Road.

No one was injured or taken to hospital after the fire filled the lobby with smoke. Twenty-two people were in the arena at the time.

Damage to the building is estimated at $5,000 and damage to the contents is estimated at $10,000. There is no word on the cause of the fire.
