Joël Gauthier remembered as caring and active

(Thursday, May 31, 2012) Joël Gauthier was buried Thursday from Très-Sainte Trinité Church in Rockland. On the eve of his funeral, Ottawa'sl CTV news channel ran a feature which they entitled: "Lightning victim remembered as caring and active":

Joel Gauthier's family is remembering an active, engaged teenager who died a few weeks short of his 19th birthday.

The Rockland native and avid cyclist was biking through Ottawa's Vincent Massey Park Friday when he was struck by lightning, passing away the next day.

1st Rockland Scouts
Victoria Day flea market a huge success

(Monday, May 21, 2012) Judging by the crowds of people and the crammed parking in and around the Grenon parking lot, this year's flea market was a grand affair.

"We had a record number of vendors and the weather was perfect," says Jeff Moore, Group Commissioner for the 1st Rockland Scouting Group. "We raised a lot of money to help our youth to attend camps and pay for our programming costs.

May 19 and 20 - Big Reunion in St-Bernardin

St-Bernardin is celebrating its centennial and all are welcome to join in the festivities during The Big Reunion, to be held on May 19 and 20 at the Caledonia Community Center.

"Gather with family, neighbours and friends for a week-end of free activities and entertainment during The Big Reunion. It’s a not to be missed event for people who have roots in St-Bernardin” said Julie Leroux, president of St-Bernardin Historical and Cultural Society and member of the organizing committee.

Activities will kick-off around noon on Saturday and go on until late Sunday evening. The centennial mass will be held Sunday at 10:30 AM, followed by the centennial brunch. For history and heritage enthusiasts, the launch of the St-Bernardin Centennial Book, a historical exhibit, a farm visit and a conference by Michel Prévost - Caledonia Springs, la plus importante ville d’eaux au Canada are on the program. Concessions bus tour and 8th grade class reunions will certainly bring back memories of good times.

There will be lots of dance and music featuring Jean-Guy Piché et la Tournée du bonheur, the signer Marc Bélanger, Jean-Pierre Duval and Disco Elektra, After Shock, Voix?là and Les Sœurs Marleau.

For competitive spirits and sports enthusiasts, a ball tournament and a washers tournament are organized. The players from the old Black Panthers and Les Copains, St-Bernardin’s baseball teams, are expected to make a comeback for a game. There will also be a kids’ area with face painting, games, activities and entertainment.

Tickets for the Centennial Brunch must be purchased in advance. Other meals will be served and a canteen will be on site.

St-Bernardin Centennial Book
The
St-Bernardin Centennial Book will be officially launched during the weekend. The 480 pages, full color and hard cover book features the history of the parish, the community and 350 families. It contains close to 1,000 pictures and is accompanied by a DVD. Books can still be reserved. The price is $70.00 per copy.

Clarence-Rockland passes new sign bylaw while there is...
Sign pollution on the Ottawa side

Thursday, May 17, 2012) While the City of Clarence-Rockland is cleaning up the errant signs that have sprung up around the various communities, the same can't be said over the Canaan Road border on the Ottawa side.

This scene is enough to distract even the most diligent of drivers as they approach the traffic lights at the Canaan/174/17 intersection.

Ontario hydro rates going up as of May 1

A typical household using 800 kilowatt hours a month will see the 'electricity' line on their hydro bill increase by nearly $6, while consumers using smart meters — or time-of-use pricing — will see an increase of about $4.
